Sailing into summer

Summertime is at my fingertips. I can smell it. No, It’s not just the pine tar that stains my hands – it’s the warm fragrance that surrounds the island of Martha’s Vineyard.

20 Seconds in Newport

Newport is beautiful, and my stay here has been far too short. Between deck duties and preparing for our next transit to Martha’s Vineyard, there has been very little free time in port.

A graceful sail to the City by the Sea

Yesterday, an early morning muster provided us with wonderful sailing weather for our first transit from New London to Newport. We mustered before dawn and cast off from New London’s City Pier at 6:30 AM.

Last hurrah in New London

Before I leave New London I wanted one last chance to say farewell. From all the places I’ve seen and all the things I’ve learned about Connecticut’s whaling city, it would be impossible to fit all of it into this blog, so I decided to make a video.

New London’s Secret Club

Since the weather is keeping us in port for an extra day, I decided to dig a little deeper into New London’s past. Most people know that the Charles W. Morgan is the last wooden whaling ship of her kind. What most people probably don’t know is that there once was an exclusive club in New London called the “Jibboom Club,” and I now think of myself as unofficial member.

Newport on the horizon

After four days of sea trials, I‘d say the Morgan, the captain, and her crew are ready to set sail for Newport, RI.

Old London vs. New London

When I’m not sailing aboard the Charles W. Morgan, I am exploring the ports. This week’s video features New London, the old and the new.

First sea trials successful!

On Saturday, June 7, the Morgan went to sea with a fully functioning rig. A nice northerly breeze blew down the Thames River and she left the New London City Pier with wind in her sails.

Take her to sea!

Here are today’s clips from the Charles W. Morgan’s first day of sea trials! One word – EXTRAORDINARY!

Tales From the Fo’c’sle

It’s crunch time at the New London City Pier, and everybody knows it, all the way from the skipper down to the lowest ranking crew member – that’s me, your humble stowaway.
